  1. Trend Watching- Life Caching
    http://www.trendwatching.com/trends/LIFE_CACHING.htm
"Trends are often a manifestation of new enablers unlocking existing human needs. [...] Point in case: collecting! Human beings (fueled by a need for self-worth, validation, control, vanity, even immortality) love to collect and store possessions, memories, experiences, in order to create personal histories, mementoes of their lives, or just to keep track for practical reasons. And with the experience economy still gaining ground -- with consumers more often favoring the intangible over the tangible -- collecting, storing and displaying experiences is ready for its big moment."
    eg blogging, photos, etc.
Okay, so I disagree. First, 'caching' is a stupid word to use. Doesn't mean what they think it means. Second, back in the physical world all creations afforded hording anyway, and for those that didn't, we develop technology to bolt it on: like writing for ideas, say. We don't make tangible for its own sake, we make tangible to share, give, remember, enjoy, whatever. Now my DVD doesn't remember where I left it, I can't give anyone my music, etc. No wonder we're trying to put that back, and we might-as-well do all the rest too.
So yeah, it's a trend, but it's no different to anything else. "Save" is a hack, a blip in the computer landscape. As is "delete." Both hacks to get around temporary, limited storage.
