So far I’ve said that what we see is composed of more than the raw perception signal. Hardwired deductions, which I’ve called ‘assumptions’ are there too. To us, these deductions are just as “real” as the signal itself.

This is important because how we respond is based on what we perceive, so we respond – in part – to what our assumptions tell us we’ve perceived.

And of course, what we perceive is partially voluntary, and partially done in co-operation with an automatic pilot training over millions of years.
